Root canal treatments treat infections that develop at the centre, or root, of a tooth in the dental pulp. If we catch the infection in time, then we can save the tooth from further damage and possible removal.
Often, the need for a root canal treatment will be determined by your dentist at a check-up appointment. However, there are a variety of symptoms associated with needing a root canal treatment. These include a loose tooth and pain when chewing or biting down.
We will first perform an X-ray to determine whether or not there is an infection at the centre of the tooth. If there is, then we will schedule an appointment for the treatment as soon as possible.
We understand that having a root canal treatment can be a worrying prospect for many patients, but there is no cause for concern. We will place you under local anaesthetic, so you won’t experience any pain or discomfort.
We’ll then place a dental dam in your mouth, so only the tooth being treated is exposed, and we’ll use a small drill to form a hole in the infected tooth. The infected dental pulp will then be removed, and we will fill in the tooth.
