Crowns are often used to complete other dental restoration treatments such as bridges, dental implants and, in some cases, root canal treatments.
For some patients, crown lengthening is necessary because there isn’t enough tooth available to secure the crown in place. This could be because your tooth is broken or too damaged by decay. You may also want a crown lengthening treatment because you have a ‘gummy smile’.
We will gently reduce the gum tissue surrounding the appropriate tooth and, if necessary, shave down bone so that more of your natural tooth is above the surface of the gums.
You will be given a local anaesthetic during the treatment, so you don’t have to worry about experiencing any pain or discomfort. It can feel uncomfortable after the anaesthetic wears off, however, at which point you may want to take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
